Description

Baalbek or Heliopolis (Sun City) is a town in the northern Bekaa valley, site of the largest sanctuary in the Roman world. Towering over Baalbek, the Roman temple complex featured in this panorama is considered the world’s largest and most intact. The Temple of Jupiter boasts 22-m high columns which dwarf the 7.5 meter-high pillars of the Acropolis in Athens. The Temple of Bacchus, dedicated to the God of Wine, was used as a fort in Mameluk times and remains largely intact.
