Palenque is a medium-sized site containing some of the finest architecture, sculpture and carvings that the Mayas produced. The massive pyramid on the right is the Temple of the Inscriptions, standing some 60 meters wide and 27 meters high it is the funerary monument of Mayan King Pakal. Today the ornate sarcophagus which contains his remains is housed in the more modern museum near the entrance.
