The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel built on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens, Greece. It contains several buildings of great architectural significance from ancient Greek history, the most famous of which is the Parthenon. The Parthenon is a former temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Other structures include the Propylaia, the Erechtheion, the Theatre of Dionysus and the Temple of Athena Nike.
