It is named after its most prominent building, the Stephansdom, Vienna's cathedral and one of the tallest churches in the world at 137 metres (448 ft) tall. This site has been a place of worship since a church stood here in 1147, with many additions and rebuilding periods taking place over the centuries to create the Gothic landmark we see today.
