Description

Helsinki North Harbour in winter, snow is on the ground and the harbour is icy. As the city is located on the southern tip of Finland, it is surrounded by the Baltic Sea, and is a large urban area, this all combines to mean that Helsinki has a relatively short snow season and the mildest winter temperatures in Finland, with the average in January and February around −5 °C (23 °F). In the winter the days are short because of its northern latitude, with less than six hours of daylight around the Winter Solstice and the midday sun never reaching very high in the sky. Contrast that with the almost 19 hours of daylight that the city experiences for the Summer Solstice!
