Description

Bear Butte rises 382 metres (1,254 feet) above the surrounding plain. Located near Sturgis, South Dakota, USA, the area was established as a State Park in 1961. It has been an important landmark and religious site for over 30 indigenous groups long before Europeans reached South Dakota. Bear Butte is called Mathó Pahá, or Bear Mountain, by the Lakota, or Sioux. Today the mountain is still sacred to many indigenous peoples, who make pilgrimages to leave offerings and visit for religious ceremonies. The mountain is a place of prayer, meditation, and peace.
