Welcome to the Western Front of World War One. As the war raged across Europe, soldiers from both sides had to dig trenches to live and fight in – these long ditches in the ground were used to protect the soldiers from enemy gunfire, while also allowing men and resources to be moved closer to the front lines. The trenches were very important to the war, as they were the only thing that stopped enemy forces moving forward.

# Conditions in the Trenches {.objective .objective1}
Students can learn about the harsh conditions that soldiers faced in the trenches. Students can observe soldiers fighting and learn about ‘going over the top’ and how the trenches were where soldiers spent all of their time.
# What was in a Trench? {.objective .objective2}
Students can walk around a trench and learn about its distinctive features. Students should be able to conclude where the main officer worked and where the other soldiers slept and ate.
# What was a typical day in the Trenches like? {.objective .objective3}
Students are able to learn that a solider had a daily routine. Here students should be able to consider how a soldiers routine is similar or different to their own.
