Nymphe dite Aréthuse (Nymph, also known as Arethusa was commissioned in 1706 from Claude Poirier and Jean Hardy to replace a lead cast of the Nymph produced around 1705. The marble statue was completed in 1711 by Poirier alone, and placed as a companion piece to Jacques Prou’s Amphitrite, on one of the fountains decorated with imitation rocks and large, colorful leaden birds, in the grounds of the Château de Marly.
