Countryside Habitat: Night

by Avantis World
This resource is only available as part of a pack

Description

This scene takes the form of a large area of countryside which contains local habitats, or micro-habitats, such as individual trees, water bodies, and hedgerows. The quiet of the night-time has settled over the countryside, and a whole host of different animals have come out.

# Learning Objectives

Be able to identify nocturnal animals{.info}

Be able to describe the adaptations of nocturnal animals{.info}

Be able to Identify nocturnal predators and prey{.info}

# Nocturnal Adaptations{.objective .objective1}

In this section, a range of characteristics of nocturnal animals will be described. These characteristics, such as heightened hearing and smell, are adaptations for nocturnal animals whose eyes may not allow them to see as well as in day time due to low light conditions. Hearting and smelling sources of food is the best alternative. Other features help animals be protected against predators, such as the hedgehog’s pricky coat.

# Predators and Prey{.objective .objective2}

In this section examples of nocturnal animals are outlined, with their specific adaptations to surviving at night. A description of the adaptations and habits are provided for the Barn owl, European red fox and bats. Typical nocturnal food chains are described , some of which the fox, bats and owl belong to as well as others, which are part of the energy transfer nocturnal animals rely on. Students should identify which animals are predators and which are prey based on the food chains.

# Human Impact{.objective .objective3}

This section describes how humans often work and interact with the countryside at night. Particularly farmers, who work through the night depending on the time of year. This can include looking after animals who may be giving birth to their offspring, harvesting crops as they may be ready anytime of day, or even dairy farmers milking their herd dairy cows. Students should identify the different types of farms and discuss the impact farming could have on the natural habit of nocturnal animals.
