Welcome to a beautiful garden – one that gives you a unique insight into just how plants reproduce. For this to happen, pollen grains need to move from the male part (the anther) of one flower to the female part (stigma) of another – this is called pollination. This process lets plants fertilise their seeds and is essential for the creation of new plants.

# Learning objectives

# How Do Plants Reproduce?{.objective .objective1}

First, bees and insects feed on the plant’s nectar then leave the flower and search for another source of nectar. The pollen from the first flower is stuck onto the plant’s stigma. The pollen then travels down the style of the flower and into the ovary fertilising the second plant. Students are asked to find the dissected flower in the Pollination scene and try to see how a bee would use it for food. Think about where they would need to go next. See if they can also spot a different plant in a different phase of its reproductive cycle (hint: look for some seeds).

# Parts of a Flower{.objective .objective2}

The parts inside the flower are important in the process of pollination. Remember, when an insect visits the flower, pollen from the anther sticks to them. Students are asked to fly to the dissected flower again and see if they can locate the anther and stigma, and see how it would be easy for a bee or other insect to brush against these parts to transfer pollen from one flower to another.

# Bees: Super Pollinators{.objective .objective3}

Many insects can pollinate plants; however, bees are by far the best. Students are asked to explore and see if they can find the bee hive and explore how the bees could be using the pollen they have collected.
