This resource is only available as part of a pack

Description

This scene takes the form of a freshwater pond. Students can explore this scene in depth to identify the key features of a freshwater biome. The area near the shore of our pond is called the littoral zone. And as you move away from the shore of the pond and into the open water, you enter the limnetic zone. Students will be able to view many kinds of life here including several species of algae, floating or rooted aquatic plants and various amphibians, fish, insects, or crustaceans.

# Learning objectives

1: To gain an understanding of the littoral zone.{.info}

2: To describe the limnetic zone.{.info}

3: To describe the profundal zone.{.info}

# The Littoral Zone{.objective .objective1}

In this section of the scene the area near the shore of our pond is called the littoral zone. This part of the pond is the warmest, as it has shallow water that absorbs more of the Sun’s heat. In this activity students are asked to enter the scene to find evidence of animals that live in the littoral zone.

# The Limnetic Zone{.objective .objective2}

In this section of the scene the limnetic zone is well lit and contains many living organisms; however, the most important in ponds and lakes is plankton. In this activity students are asked to enter the scene to find plankton.

# The Profundal Zone{.objective .objective3}

In this section of the scene the water here is much colder and denser than the other two zones and not much light makes it down this far. Most of the animals that will survive here are heterotrophs, meaning that they eat dead organisms and use oxygen for cellular respiration. In this activity students are asked to enter the scene to compare it to the limnetic and littoral zones, looking for differences between the three zones.
