Coastal Biome

This scene takes the form of a coastal, or near shore, biome. The scene includes a sandy beach, a rocky cliff and a small section of shallow water. This biome stretches out from the high waterline on shore to the continental shelf where the Earth’s crust drops off into the deepest part of the ocean. There are three key areas: Sandy beach, the rocky cliffs and shallow water.

# Features of a Coastal Biome{.objective .objective1}

The first section of the scene looks at the key features that make up a coastal biome. These include: shallow water, a sandy beach and a rocky cliff. The activity for section one asks students to look for any features they can find that are unique to the coast.

# Coastal Biomes in the Real World{.objective .objective2}

This section looks specifically at the different coastal biomes that exist on every continent. The activity for section two asks the students to look for ways in which the coastal biome is protecting the mainland it surrounds.
