Mountain (Alpine) Biome

Description

This scene takes the form of a mountain (Alpine) biome - these amazing parts of the world are found across the globe and contain a huge variety of plants and animals that have adapted to survive at low temperatures and high altitudes. Students are asked to explore the biome to identify its key features and learn about people who live in an Alpine biome. Students should be able to compare a mountain biome with other types of biomes that exist within the world.

Follow the trail from the base of the mounting right up to it's peak. Along the way students will see links to 360 images that show examples of mountain side habitats. Take a journey through the changing terrain and explore how the changing conditions impacts livings things and their survival.

# Features and Weather{.objective .objective1}

In this section of the scene students can learn that alpine biomes are found in mountainous regions that range from 40 to 60°F (4.5 to 15.5°C) and in winter the temperatures will almost always drop below freezing. In this activity, students are asked to consider how high up the mountain they might be? The students are also asked where the Alpine biome will end and how they believe the biome further down the mountain would look.

# Mountains and the People Who Live There{.objective .objective2}

In this section there are many famous mountains that are discussed from all around the world, including: Mount Everest in the Himalayas which is home to sherpas who help mountaineers climb this famous peak. Students will consider how someone might adapt to live in this climate; specifically focusing on housing conditions and clothing.
