How Mountains Are Formed

by Avantis World
This resource is only available as part of a pack

Description

Mountains are huge landforms, with their steep sides towering above the surrounding landscape on the surface of the Earth. But how are mountains formed? This scene takes the form of a fold mountain, a volcano and a dome mountain. Each mountain formation can be viewed from above to see the ‘realistic’ view of how the mountain looks on Earth’s surface, and artificially ‘cut away’ to show the processes happening below ground. Students can travel though different heights to experience the mountains from above and from the ground below.

# Learning objectives

1: To identify and define fold mountains.{.info}

2: To describe how a volcano is formed.{.info}

3: To identify and define dome mountains.{.info}

# Fold Mountains{.objective .objective1}

In this section fold mountains can be seen where material has been pushed upwards as the plates collide. In this activity students should enter the scene and find out what happens to the plates below the surface and to describe the appearance of a mountain range.

# Volcanoes{.objective .objective2}

In this section volcanoes are formed when hot molten rock called magma rises from deep below the ground and breaks through to the Earth’s surface. Students are asked to describe the shape of the landform and to describe how the landform will change overtime.

# Dome Mountains{.objective .objective3}

In this section dome mountains are also formed by the activity of hot, liquid magma beneath the surface, but here the magma pushes the ground upwards, but it never breaks through the Earth’s thick surface at this location. In this section, students are asked to describe how the mountain appears on the surface of the Earth.
