Life in Britain During World War Two

This scene takes students inside an average house in Britain during World War Two. The furnishings and decorations have been designed to give students a feel for how people lived during this time, there is also evidence within the scene to help students learn about rationing, the Home Guard, first aid and how life would have been of ordinary people during the war. outside of the house, students can see inside a recreated Anderson shelter and explore how people converted their gardens to grow their own food.

# Learning objectives

1: Find out what homes were like for an average family living in Britain during the Second World War, 1939-1945{.info}

2: See some ways that families were prepared for the dangers of war, including gas masks and shelters in the home{.info}


# Daily Life{.objective .objective1}

The first section looks at what life was like for an average family in early 1940s Britain. Students can compare how they Live Today against a home in World War Two Britain. The first activity challenges students to explore the house and understand how people spent their free time and what tools were used for household chores.

# Food supplies {.objective .objective2}

The second section of the scene challenges students to think about rationing and how it would affect daily life. The scene contains evidence of tinned food in a pantry and also food grown in the garden. This activity asks students to look at food supplies around the house and think about what changes have been made because of the war.

# Keeping Safe{.objective .objective3}

Here students will be looking at how people protected themselves while at home during the war focusing on the Anderson shelter in the garden and the gas masks in the house. Students can also view the Home Guard uniform and learn about the role that they played on the home front. This activity challenges students to find evidence for how people kept themselves safe during the war.
