Anatomy of a Storm

by Avantis World

Description

This scene takes the form of a thunderstorm. Within the scene, there are a selection of arrows which highlight the different direction of the wind and a cumulonimbus cloud that can be explored. These storm clouds hold huge volumes of water, ready to fall as torrential rain. Strong winds rush around the area, sometimes even developing into tornadoes at the base of the cloud, while lightning can strike the ground. Study a storm in detail and experience some of the distinctive characteristics from the safety of VR!

# Learning objectives

1: To understand the key features of a cumulonimbus cloud.{.info}

2: To understand the effect of strong winds.{.info}

3: To understand the differences and outcomes of rainfall and lightning.{.info}

# Cumulonimbus Cloud{.objective .objective1}

In this section cumulonimbus clouds are produced by convection. They frequently form after a hot day has raised the temperature of the ground, warming the air above. In this activity students are asked to enter the scene to find out what a cumulonimbus cloud is, how it appears and whether they move.

# Strong Winds{.objective .objective2}

In this section strong winds are experienced during storms. The difference in the atmosphere creates unstable conditions as the air is pushed and pulled around. Warm, moist air rises up, and cold air from high in the atmosphere rushes down as a downdraft. Students can look for examples of windy conditions in the scene.

# Rainfall and Lightening{.objective .objective3}

In this section heavy rainfall is associated with storms, as huge volumes of water are held in these towering clouds then dropped onto the landscape. In this section lightning is caused by electrical imbalances in the clouds. Students should enter the scene and explore the impact of flash flooding on the environment.
