This scene transports users to the wild and windswept setting of the poem The Highwayman. Alfred Noyes created a romantic and tragic poem, telling a tale of love and sacrifice. As students explore the scene they can find a Highwayman waiting far up the road, an inn with Bess’s bedroom upstairs and a view out her window towards the Highwayman, and a stable block where jealous Tim works.

# The Highwayman{.objective .objective1}
In this section students can learn about the how people travelled in the time the poem is set, and what a highwayman was. In this activity students are invited to focus on the inn to think about what it was like to travel in the 18th century, and then to search for the Highwayman on the country road.
# Bess, the Landlord’s Daughter{.objective .objective2}
Students will find out that Bess was the daughter of the inn’s owner, and that she lives above the inn. They can visit Bess’s bedroom to see the view from her window towards the Highwayman on the road, and to see evidence that the soldiers kept her here, such as rope and a gun
# The Story Ends{.objective .objective3}
In this section a description is given of the tragic ending to the poem, as Bess fires the gun so that the sound of the gunshot warns the Highwayman to stay away, as Bess takes her own life to save his. The Highwayman is then killed on the road. The poem ends with the ghosts of the two lovers meeting on the night of a full moon. Students will return to the scene and consider why the writer chose the format of a poem to tell this story, and what qualities this gives to the tale.
