Description

This scene transports users to a typical settlement from the Indus Valley Civilisation. The Indus Valley Civilisation existed from 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE, and experienced its mature form from 2600 BCE to 1900 BCE. It was found in the valley of the Indus River, which is in modern-day Pakistan and North India. The Indus Valley civilization is known to have created one of the first planned cities which had modern water supplies and drainage systems.

# What was the Indus Civilisation? {.objective .objective1}

A summary is given of the time and location of the Indus Civilisation, as well as some of its society’s key characteristics, including their relationship with the river, their urban planning and advanced drainage systems, and their seemingly mostly peaceful existence.

# What was it like to live in the Indus Civilisation? {.objective .objective2}

In this section a description is given of the style of settlements built by the Indus Civilisation and their use of trading systems rather than currency to exchange goods, as well as other details about typical daily life for people in the civilisation. In this activity students explore the buildings and evidence of the activities daily life for people living in the Indus Civilisation.

# What happened to the Indus Civilisation? {.objective .objective3}

In this section a description is given of how Historians believe this Civilisation came to an end, including the overpopulation of cities, collapse of trading networks, possible war and killings, and physical events such as changes to the Indus River flow. In this activity students explore the scene once more, searching for clues about how the Civilisation disappeared.
