Coastal Erosion

by Avantis World

Description

The scene lets students explore a coastline to learn about coastal erosion and how transportation of sediments can change the coastline. By observing the natural activity of waves swashing and backwashing on the coast, students will develop an understanding of how water erodes coastlines and the impact it may have on human activity. As such, they will also explore methods of coastal management.

# Learning objectives

1: To describe how sediment is moved by water on the coastline.{.info}

2: To explain how sediment is formed due to coastal erosion.{.info}

3: To understand the impact of coastal erosion.{.info}

# The Shifting Sands{.objective .objective1}

Students will learn about how sediments are transported by moving water and the four methods involved. Students will be asked to explore the coastline scene and observe the movement of the waves.

# Coastal Erosion{.objective .objective2}

Students will learn that coastal erosion is the destruction of the coastline caused by waves crashing on rock platforms, breaking up the rocks and wearing them away. Students will be asked to look for evidence or signs of erosion and the impact it’s having on the coastal shape.

# Impact of Erosion{.objective .objective3}

Students will learn about how erosion is impacting coastal habitats and human inhabitation. They will develop an understanding that the ever-changing coastline can affect the distribution of wildlife due to the changing habitats. Students will be asked to explore the scene a final time and observe the coastal management methods modelled.
