Continents and Oceans

This scene showcases a giant globe, which highlights the seven continents and five oceans of planet Earth. Each location has been given a colour to help students and teachers to name the regions that are being studied.

# Learning objectives

# Continents{.objective .objective1}

In this section students can focus on the seven continents of Earth, the large land masses of Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia. In this activity students are invited to focus on the land masses of Earth, to name each continent, and to think about where continents have their borders.

# Oceans{.objective .objective2}

In this section students turn their attention to the five oceans of Earth, finding their locations on the giant globe. In this activity students observe and can name the five oceans, consider what the boundaries between different named oceans are really like and think about where the coldest ocean waters would be.

# Islands{.objective .objective3}

In this section a description is given of just two of the different ways that islands can be formed – by volcanoes rising from the seabed or when areas of land become separated from the main land mass by a sea. In this activity students are asked to locate some different islands around the world on the globe, and think about how they differ from the larger land masses of the continents.
