Travel and Tourism – Ports

Description

This scene transports users to a fictionalised port area which brings together different ways that ports are used, showcasing ports as a transport hub, a tourist destination, and also a view to a container ship showing the use of shipping for transporting cargo. Students can see a variety of boats and ships that might be used by tourists, and can explore the facilities on land from ticket offices to cafés with waterfront views.

# Learning objectives

# What are ports, and where are they found?{.objective .objective1}

Students can learn that ports are where boats can access land, and they can be found on coasts, islands, rivers, and lakes. Natural features of the landscape make some areas more suitable for becoming ports. In this activity students are invited to consider what features of the natural landscape mean that this location has had a port develop here.

# Ports for onward travel{.objective .objective2}

In this section a description is given of why tourists might use a port in order to travel further on their journey, such as to access small islands, or as part of a cruise ship journey. In this activity students observe the section of the scene showing a port as a transport hub and find the different types of boat and the facilities available on land.

# Ports as destinations{.objective .objective3}

In this section a description is given of how ports which may have once been fishing villages are now tourist destinations in themselves. Students should explore this section of the scene and consider what tourists might do on a visit here.
