The Great Fire of Rome

This scene lets students explore the area around the front of the Circus Maximus stadium and the devastating effect of the Great Fire of Rome. Exploring the narrow streets and alley ways students gain an insight in what it was like to be trapped in the streets trying to escape the raging fire.

# Learning objectives

# The Fire of Rome {.objective .objective1}

Students will learn about how the fire started and understand the impact wooden structures has in speeding up the process. Students will need to consider other factors which made the fire spread quickly, like the close proximity of houses and shacks neighbouring each other.

# Devastation of a City {.objective .objective2}

Students can learn about how the people in the areas of the fire reacted and tried to stop it. The students will be encouraged to try and escape the area and realise they cant. They will be asked to consider how the elderly and children who were the most vulnerable felt being trapped.

# Conspiracy Theories {.objective .objective3}

Students will observe how the people of Rome grew suspicious of Nero due to his absence from the city. Students need to think about if the emperor Nero would do such a thing as a deliberately set the city on fire.
