Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine

by Avantis World
This resource is only available as part of a pack

Description

The scene takes the form of Leonardo da Vinci’s workshop where you can explore his flying machines. The scene will have two of flying machines, with the main one being the winged flying machines. Students will learn about the forward-thinking imagination of da Vinci’s designs and how they were ahead of their time. Importantly, how da Vinci’s work inspired modern engineers in the development of flying machines such as the airplanes and helicopters.

# Learning objectives

1: Be able to describe the engineering of the flying machine.{.info}

2: Be able to evaluate the impact of da Vinci’s design on modern flying machines{.info}

# Curiosity of Flight{.objective .objective1}

In this section, the inspiration to Leonardo da Vinci’s flying machine will be described. Da Vinci was a renowned artist, designer and engineer who was thought to be forward thinking and a pioneer to many engineering technologies still used today. Many of his designs inspired modern versions of machines widely used in many industries. The flight of birds and bats was one of many curiosities that inspired his work.

# The Design{.objective .objective2}

In this section, the basic design and the principle behind it will be outlined. The premise of the structure was to allow a human to operate levels to mimic the action birds and bats used to take flight. The only limitation was the technology of the material used, as they were too heavy. A human could not generate enough power to overcome the weight.

# Engineering of Flight{.objective .objective3}

In this section, a description of examples of technology that da Vinci’s designs inspired will be outlined. His pioneering forward thinking designs paved the way for modern aviation. As technology allowed lightweight materials to be developed and engines to generate more power were made, humans were able to achieve flight.
