This scene takes the form of a giant lab where displacement reactions can be observed. By exploring the modelled reactions, displacement of less reactive models takes place, as students develop an understanding of the reactivity series of metals.

# Learning objectives

# Reactivity Series{.objective .objective1}

In this section, the reactivity series is described and how it can be determined by looking at organisation of metals on the periodic table. An overview of the reactivity series will be provided to show the order of reactivity of metals from most reactive to least reactive.

# Displacement Reactions{.objective .objective2}

In this section, displacement reactions will be described. Reactions that involve metals and metal compounds, by using the reactivity series, the outcome of a displacement reaction can be predicted if they happen at all. Using the reaction between calcium and magnesium carbonate students should use word equations to represent and predict the reaction if it takes place. Observations such as fizzing, colour change, temperature change, etc., can be used to determine if a reaction has taken place.

# Uses of Displacement Reactions{.objective .objective3}

In this section, uses of displacement reactions will be described. Examples such as extraction of metal from their ores, as well as the thermite reaction to join large metal structures like railway tracks, will be described.
