Abolition of Slavery in Britain

The Atlantic Slave Trade occurred between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. During this time, 12 million Africans were bought as goods, packed into ships, and were sent across the Atlantic to the Americas, where they were sold as slaves. At the end of the eighteenth century, public opinion began to turn against the slave trade and abolitionists led by William Wilberforce campaigned to the end slavery. In this scene, students can explore a court and learn about his campaigns to end the slave trade.  # Learning Objectives 1: Understand the Slave Triangle and some of the Slave-Trading Nations{.info} 2: Understand who William Wilberforce was{.info} 3: Understand the prevailing attitudes during this era and how Wilberforce’s actions shaped history{.info} # Abolitionist Campaigns{.objective .objective1} In this section, students can learn about how abolitionists publicly announced that they opposed slavery in 1761. In this section, students are also asked to identify the map of the middle passage. # William Wilberforce {.objective .objective2} In this section, students can learn about William Wilberforce and his campaign to end the slave trade. # Why were the abolitionist campaigns successful?{.objective .objective3} In this section, students can learn about the different factors which contributed to the abolitionist campaigns being a success.
