This scene transports students to a reconstruction of Canterbury Cathedral. In this scene students can learn about the life and death of Thomas Becket. Thomas Becket was the Archbishop of Canterbury between the years of 1162 – 1170 and was, therefore, the most important bishop in England. In 1170 CE, he was brutally murdered in Canterbury Cathedral. Historians have long debated whether his murder was on the orders of King Henry II, or if it was a terrible mistake.

Students can learn about Becket becoming Archbishop of Canterbury and Henry II’s chancellor. Students are asked to identify anything in the scene which highlights the broken relationship that existed between Henry II and Thomas Becket.

Students can observe the weapon that was used to kill Thomas Becket and discover how the murder was planned. Students should consider the impact of killing an individual and why the setting of the murder is so important to consider.
# What were the consequences of Thomas Becket murder? {.objective .objective3}
Students can learn about the aftermath of Thomas Beckets death and what happened to King Henry II and his knights. In this section students are asked to consider what could have happened after Thomas Becket’s death.
