The Inca Civilisation

This scene takes the form of a reconstructed area of Machu Picchu. The Inca Empire, otherwise known as the Realm of the Four Parts, was the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. Machu Picchu was a city of the Inca Empire and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was voted one of the new seven Wonders of the World. During its height, the Inca Civilisation stretched 4,000 km (2,500 miles) along South America’s Pacific Coastline from modern-day Ecuador to modern-day Chile.

# Where is Machu Picchu? {.objective .objective1}

Students can virtually visit the ancient site of Machu Picchu, located at the top of the Andes Mountain range in south Peru. Here students should be able to discuss with each other who they think about who may have lived there.

# How was Machu Picchu Built? {.objective .objective2}

In this section students can learn that the buildings located at Machu Picchu were built without mortar. Students should consider why this maybe problematic and how should Machu Picchu be preserved for the future.

# What is The Intihuatana? {.objective .objective3}

Students can observe the stone structure which was believed to have helped the sun stay in place and keep it on its correct path.
