Alexander The Great

During the fourth century BCE, Alexander the Great of Macedon began a new period of history, this was known as The Hellenistic Age. Derived from the term Hellene, meaning Greek, this Hellenistic Age saw the spread of Greek ideas and culture south down to Egypt and east towards modern day Afghanistan. In this scene, students can explore the lighthouse of Alexandria and learn about Alexander the Great in detail!

# Who was Alexander the Great? {.objective .objective1}

Here students can learn all about Alexander the Great, son of Philip II of Macedon and Olympias. They can understand how he was educated by Aristotle and discuss the impact this had on his adult life.

# Why was the Alexandria Lighthouse Built? {.objective .objective2}

Walking around the Alexandria Lighthouse allows students to reflect on the Hellenistic World and understand how the Greek rulers of Egypt built this lighthouse on the Pharos small island next to Alexandria’s harbour.

# What happened to Alexander’s Empire after he died? {.objective .objective3}

After Alexander the Great’s death, his empire declined and broke into separate kingdoms. Students can observe Alexander’s portrait and discuss how he is remembered throughout history, including the idea of a hero presented in Greek mythology.
