This scene will take the reconstructed from of a small town near Tarrytown in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Students can explore this town where they will be able to find a church, mass graveyards, the Headless Horseman and key characters from the book. In this scene students can learn about how the author sets up a confrontation between two characters to highlight his views on the city and countryside. Students should consider how they believe the town of Sleepy Hollow got its name and what mood the setting of the story creates.

In this scene students can learn about how the Legend of the Sleepy Hollow is a story about stories and storytellers. They will be asked to identify the Headless Horseman and the weapon he uses.

In this scene students can learn about the setting of the novel in detail and how the narrator does this to demonstrate the endless resources of a new and unproven nation. In this section students are asked to explore the scene and describe the style of the narrator throughout the book.
