Boreal Frozen Forest Biome

Welcome to a section of the world’s largest forest. This forest covers 17 million square kilometres (6.6 million square miles) or 11.5% of Earth’s land area, second only to deserts and xeric shrublands. Walk through this Frozen Forest and learn about the key features of a Boreal Biome and the threats it faces in the twenty-first century.

# A Boreal Forest Biome{.objective .objective1}

In this scene students can explore the Boreal Forest and learn about the forest being characterised by coniferous trees, including pine, spruces, and larches. Students can also lean how the colder climate hinders the development of soil, which the plants would normally use for nutrients.

In this section students are asked to explore the Boreal Forest and look for any evidence that helps to identify this landscape as harsh. They may be able to spot some animals for example, which have had to adapt to this environment.

# Threats Facing Boreal Forests {.objective .objective2}

In this scene students can explore the forest and look at the river that passes through in detail. They will be able to notice erosion that is taking place, alongside trees being cut down to be used for timber and paper.

In this section students are asked to think about how this biome compares to where they live. They should consider in detail how mankind can try to reduce the threats the forest faces each year.
