Description

The River Danube is the longest river in Western Europe, flowing through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova and Romania. Students will learn how the river has played a significant role in the industrial and commercial development of the countries it flows through. As they enter the scene, they will be able to explore the biodiverse environment of the Danube delta wetlands.

**Scene Overview and Key Elements:**

The scene allows students to explore a section of the Danube Delta and learn about the habitat and some of the animals that live there. They will learn about the journey of the Danube and the human impact on the river.

## The River System{.objective. Objective1}

Students will learn about the journey of the Danube as the second largest river in Europe; from its source to its delta and its three basins. They will be asked to explore the scene and find the map. They will consider where the upper, middle and lower basins are located.

## Animals and Habitat{.object. objective2}

Students will learn about the biodiverse environment of the Danube with a particular focus on the delta wetlands. They will learn about the impact pollution is having on the river. They will be asked to explore the scene and identify animals that live in the delta and consider if any are currently an endangered species.

## Human Use and Impact{.objective. objective3}

Students will learn about the role the Danube River and its importance to the commercial, agricultural and economic development of its neighbouring countries. Students will consider the environmental impact of industrial development on the health of the river. They will be directed to the fishing boat and asked to consider the impact pollution could have on the fish populations of the Danube.

**Assignment:**

Design a poster to raise awareness of the effects of pollution and water contamination on the habitat of the river Danube.
