Description

This scene takes the form of a cauldron style landscape where different types of landslides can be observed and explored. Through the exploration, the specific characteristics of the landslides, their causes and their impact can be observed.

# Learning objectives

1: Be able to describe the different types of landslides.{.info}

2: Be able to explain how natural factors can cause landslides.{.info}

3: Be able to evaluate the hazards caused.{.info}

# Soil Creep and Slumping{.objective .objective1}

In this section a description and comparison between soil creeping and slumping will be provided. While both have a characteristic sliding movement of soil that has been saturated by extensive periods of rain, Slumping is more prominent and devastating. This is due to larger soil and rock movement. Creeping is slow. However, both will have characteristic cracks on the surface as parts of the surface are pulling away from each other.

Students will be asked to identify and compare slumping and creeping landslides.

# Debris Flow{.objective .objective2}

In this section a description of Debris Flow will be provided. Extensive rainfall can saturate areas of soil, what eventually loosens and flows down a slope carrying debris: trees, rocks, branches, etc. The water saturated soil creates a river of debris as it collects it as it flows town a mountain.

Students will be asked to observe the landslides and identify debris flow. They will be asked to describe the evidence for the landslide.

# Rockfall{.objective .objective3}

In this section, a description of rockfall will be provided. Rockfall will be compared to other types of landslides as being large rocks coming away from a mountain or hill side due to Various factors such as weather, erosion, and human activity, and not excessive rain.

Students will be asked to observe and identify rock fall. They will be asked to describe the evidence for the type of landslide.
