Description

Unlike fish farms, wild fisheries refer to the harvesting of fish from the oceans. They serve as important sources of food, employment, and income worldwide. Europe has a long history of fishing of both wild and farmed fisheries however, the impact of overfishing has caused many countries to take measures to ensure sustainability and the future of the fishing industry.

This scene allows students to explore a fishing boat and engage in an interactive sorting activity to identify fish species at risk of extinction due to overfishing. Students can discover some of the ways the fishing industry are amending their methods to ensure sustainability of wild fisheries and understand the risks of overfishing.

# Fishing Industry in Poland and Europe{.objective .objective1}

In this section students can learn the importance of the fishing industry in Europe with a focus on Poland. They will investigate some of the common fishing methods and assess their sustainability.

Students will be asked to explore the scene and determine which fishing method is being used on the boat.



# Sustainable Fishing {.objective .objective2}

Students will be introduced to sustainable fishing practices and the risks of overfishing on wild fish populations.

Students will be asked to identify Baltic cod as a species at risk of extinction from overfishing. They should interact with the fish placed on the boat deck and sort the permitted fish into the crate on the deck and move the Baltic cod back into the sea.



# Sustainability Measures in Poland{.objective .objective3}

This section describes some of the actions being taken in Poland to promote sustainable fishing and prevent overfishing.

Students will be asked to consider why fish quotas are so important to follow.
