Description

Learning objectives

1: Describe the purpose of rice fields.{.info}

2: Describe the role of rice fields in sustainability.{.info}

3: Explain the impact of rice fields on the environment{.info}

The scene takes the form of a rice field to show how rice is farmed. The layout highlights the tiered organisation of the rice fields, and the irrigation that goes into flooding them as they are prepared for planting rice plants. The animated methane molecules illustrate their production due to the waterlogged conditions and consequently being a significant contributor to the greenhouse effect.

# What are Rice Fields?{.objective .objective1}

Rice fields should be described as waterlogged farmland, requiring a lot of irrigation to create the conditions for rice to grow. Rice fields commonly appear on flood planes or near rivers, however, now one of the largest farming practices, they do appear further inland.

Students will be asked to explore the scene and identify clues that irrigation is required. They will be asked to consider why oxen and water buffalo are preferred as working animals on rice farms.

# Rice Fields and Pollution{.objective .objective2}

Due to the waterlogged land, anaerobic conditions encourage anaerobic bacteria to grow that produce large amounts of methane which is a greenhouse gas and a significant contributor to the greenhouse effect. The impact on pollution should be discussed.

Students will be asked to explore the scene and identify evidence for methane production and where it is originating from.

# Rice Fields and the Environment{.objective .objective3}

In this section, the impact of rice farming on the environment and biodiversity will be described. From deforestation to habitat destruction.

Students will be asked to explore the landscape as an overview. They will be asked to look for evidence of largescale land clearance.
