Description

Fog is a meteorological phenomenon characterised by a thick cloud of tiny water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the air near the Earth's surface. It is a type of low-lying cloud that reduces visibility and can create a hazy or misty appearance. In this scene, students can explore a high street and observe how fog forms and ways it can affect people’s everyday life.

# Lesson Objectives:

Explain the process of fog formation. {.info}

Analyse the characteristics of fog. {.info}

Explain how fog can affect our everyday lives. {.info}

# How Does Fog Form? {.objective .objective1}

Fog is formed when moist air meets a cooler surface, causing the air to cool down and reach its dew point. The dew point is the temperature at which the air becomes saturated, meaning it can no longer hold all the moisture it contains. As a result, the excess moisture condenses into tiny water droplets or ice crystals, creating a visible cloud-like formation known as fog.

Students can observe different fog formations including Radiation Fog, Advection Fog, Upslope Fog and Evaporation Fog.

# What are the Characteristics of Fog? {.objective .objective2}

The characteristics of fog include reduced visibility, moisture content, cloud-like appearance, temperature effects and formation and dissipation.

Students can look closely at the scene and discover how fog effects transportation.

# What safety measures and precautions can be taken during foggy conditions? {.objective .objective3}

Fog can have various impacts on our daily lives, affecting different aspects of our routines and activities including transportation disruptions, reduced visibility and safety, school and work schedules and outdoor activities.

Students can explore the scene and consider why it is important to study and understand the effects of fog, specifically in workplace industries.
