Description

**Key Elements and Scene Summary**

Users serve up a banquet to gnomes on a cobblestone beach, apportioning the correct fractions of foods as their plates request. The scope appeals to young learners’ willingness to experiment with fractions: aim to create groups of 24 with rings, see how fractions as numbers can be placed on a number line, and think about how fractions apply to geometric shapes. The banquet table ‘plating up’ activity is designed to foster discussion or consolidate several aspects of their fraction understanding.

# Learning Objectives

Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole.{.info}

Find equivalent fractions using bar models and form links with multiplication facts.{.info}

Calculate fractions of an amount.{.info}

# Feed Me Fractions{.objective .objective1}

- Each gnome’s plate poses 3 fraction questions, relating to an amount of the divided foods. Learners demonstrate their knowledge by moving the correct portions to the plates. Different gnomes target different areas of the fraction curriculum as follows:

‘Gluttonous’ Orange (adding)
‘Abstemious’ Purple (subtracting)
‘Orderly’ Green (equivalence)
‘Excitable’ Yellow (fractions of amounts)
‘Copy’ Blue (reasoning)
‘Irritable’ Red (discussion why these fractions not one half)

# 24 Rings to Please the King{.objective .objective2}

- This differentiated activity centres on bridging the gap between manipulatives and numerical understanding. Numbered collections of rings are movable for learners to place on the platform, tasked with finding ways to make full sets of 24 rings. Learners can use addition or skip counting to access the task; it is important to prompt them to follow with a fraction equation, as for:
^12^/~24~ + ^12^/~24~ = ^24^/~24~ = 1
- Where appropriate, the activity can be tailored to the abilities of learners: the most able will deduce that the number of required groupings of a particular numerical set corresponds to the simplest form of the fraction, e.g. three groupings of 8 are required, so:
^8^/~24~ + ^8^/~24~ + ^8^/~24~ = ^1^/~3~ + ^1^/~3~ + ^1^/~3~ = 1

# Sun-Catchers{.objective .objective3}

- Learners observe the sun-catchers and read through the accompanying materials to understand the importance of equal parts and see how geometry can illustrate numerical concepts. This task is slightly more demanding, but pupils are guided by a step-by-step approach.
