Description

**Key Elements and Scene Summary**

An aspirational gamer’s bedroom is the basis for a greater understanding of fractions. The setting is designed to inspire learners to take charge of their mathematics by solving problems related to a sleep schedule, a recipe, and planetary orbits. Familiar models of number lines are applied in the context of a computer game and a battery recharger bed.

# Learning Objectives

Count up and down in hundredths and understand the relationship to tenths.{.info}

Solve problems involving fractions of amounts and fraction addition.{.info}

Work fluently with fractions across different models (number line, geometric).{.info}

# The Streamer’s Studio{.objective .objective1}

- Learners are directed to look at the computer game screen, centring on using a number line to answer two fraction questions, revealing the full journey of the onscreen character.
- The accompanying materials ask whether the gamer’s shelves are half full, to be determined by counting the triangles and understanding ^7^/~16~ is less than ^1^/~2~.
- The recharger bed serves counting in hundredths to deduce that ^75^/~100~ of a ‘full 8 hours’ sleep was received. The visual battery conveys ^75^/~100~ = ^3^/~4~ for a final answer of 6 hours.

# Check Out the Checkerboard Cookies!{.objective .objective2}

- The key question asks whether the ingredients present in the scene (teaspoons, cups, sachets) are enough to produce 60 cookies from a 180 batch recipe. Learners calculate fractions of amounts and see the relevance of fractions in cookery. The recipe involves different quantities, including those which would be difficult to divide by three, to build fluency with operations and judge appropriate methods (if 8^1^/~2~ cups flour needs to be scaled down, is it necessary to be exact? 3 cups are present, so it is enough). It emerges that cocoa powder is not sufficient.

# Master of the Universe{.objective .objective3}

- Four space questions are provided for learners to solve by considering the planetarium orbiting overhead. Questions include calculating ^9^/~10~ of an amount to establish weight on Venus, understanding ^91^/~100~ is greater than ^9^/~10~, and observing that Mercury takes ^1^/~4~ of the time Earth takes to complete an orbit (by noting the 4 revolutions of Mercury until alignment occurs again).
- The final question is higher order though guided with a diagram, requiring students to count by adding fractions of the same denominator. Students should sum 5 lots of ^3^/~2~ to find the number of Earth years, and 5 lots of (2 + ^3^/~5~) to find the Venus years until realignment at the 12 o’clock position.
