Description

**Key Elements and Scene Summary**

The scene takes the form of a market maze where students need to negotiate their way through. Throughout the maze, students will need to determine the correct direction at key junctions in the market maze. They are presented with stalls with priced items and how much has been handed over to pay. They simply need to determine the change they would receive. Next to the stall there will be two arrows indicating which way to go. Only one direction will lead to the exit. The other…? A dead end. Calculate the correct change and make your way out.

The final challenge will present the students will a shopping list. Simply calculate the total spend on each column. Calculate the change they would receive if the value shown is paid. Then move the movable coins next to the board to make up a combination of coins totalling the change.

# Learning Objectives

1. Calculate total values from cents and dollars.{.info}

2. Calculate the difference between values.{.info}

# Making Change{.objective .objective1}

The idea of calculating the difference between values of money should be introduced. Paying for items doesn’t just involve adding coins and bills to make a new value. Sometimes working out the difference between what is paid and the value of what is bought can be useful.

Students should be encouraged to negotiate the market maze. The only way is to work out and make the change from the money paid. The change will reveal the correct direction through the maze.

# How Much Change?{.objective .objective2}

Addition and subtraction should help with the next task. Adding helps with making up new values or working out the total value. Subtraction helps with making change.

Students should complete the final shopping quiz using the movable money. By working out the total of each purchase shown, and the change to be made from the payment, they will move the combination of coins make up the value of the change.
