Marble is a metamorphic rock that forms when limestone is exposed to heat and pressure during metamorphism. It is primarily composed of calcite (CaCO3). During metamorphism, the calcite in limestone recrystallizes, forming interlocking calcite crystals that give marble its characteristic texture.
