Mars One Base

This scene takes place on the surface of Mars, at the site of the proposed ‘Mars One Base’. While the site itself will never be made, students can explore what was proposed as the first settlement on the ‘Red Planet.’ The scene includes habitation, survival suits and solar panels, all designed to promote discussions around the conditions on Mars.

# Staying Alive{.objective .objective1}

This section looks specifically at the conditions on the surface of Mars and how future astronauts may have to prepare to survive them. The activity for this section asks students to look the conditions on the planet’s surface and think about how they are different to Earth and what you would need to do to survive on Mars

# Working on Mars{.objective .objective2}

Section two focuses on what would need to be done to prepare the surface for habitation. The activity asks students to find what jobs they think the astronauts in the scene are doing.

# Planet Power{.objective .objective3}

This section focuses on how power would be harnessed to generate enough electricity. The activity focuses on the power equipment and whether it’s suitability for long term use.

# Phone Home?{.objective .objective4}

The final section of this scene gives a brief overview of how astronauts on Mars could communicate back to Earth and what equipment they would need to use. There are currently no answers for how to solve this problem long term so the task for this section asks students to think about how the problem could be solved.
