Tidal Waves and Tsunamis

# Learning objectives 1: To describe how a tidal wave is formed.{.info} 2: To describe how a tsunami is formed.{.info} 3: To explain how coastlines can be protected.{.info} # Tidal Waves{.objective .objective1} In this section a tidal wave is shown as a shallow water wave that is caused by the effects of gravity between the Sun, Moon and Earth. In this activity students are asked to enter the scene to explore how tidal waves can cause a significant amount of damage to an environment. # Tsunami{.objective .objective2} A tsunami is much closer to the destructive waves we might see on TV – these huge walls of water can be incredibly destructive and cause an enormous amount of damage and even loss of life. In this activity students are asked to enter the scene to explore how tsunamis are caused and how a city can protect itself from a tsunami. # Protecting the Coastline{.objective .objective3} A tsunami can be understood to be a deadly event and it is important for countries that are frequently hit to take proper measures to reduce the damage caused onshore.
