Description

William Golding’s novel, Lord of the flies was written in 1945 and tells the dramatic story of a group of boys who find themselves stranded on an unknown desert island in the Pacific Ocean. The boys struggled to develop rules and order however without any adults they eventually descend into violence and brutality. The story focuses on several characters but mainly looks at the battle for power between Ralph and Jack. You find yourself on the island after the story is finished, with the boys evacuated safely on a Navy boat in the distance…

# Civilisation and Savagery{.objective .objective1}

In this section students can look at the two main impulses human beings have. In the activity students are asked to explore the scene and look for any evidence of the books allegorical devices that Golding used to show human nature.

# The Loss of Innocence{.objective .objective2}

In this section the students can learn that when the boys arrive on the island, they are civilised. In this activity students are asked to enter the scene and find the clearing that Simon sits in during chapter 3.

# The Inherent Evil of Man{.objective .objective3}

In this section we see Golding imply that man is inherently evil. In this activity students are asked to enter the scene again and explore the symbols used by Golding to depict man’s evil.

# The Future of Mankind{.objective .objective4}

In this section there is a stark reminder towards the middle of the book that the world is still at war. In this activity students are asked to look around the scene and try to find anything that displays Golding’s attitude towards war.
