How do Eyes Work?

This scene takes place in a fantasy landscape inspired by Lord of the Rings. The scene models a human eye looking out into the landscape focusing of a few items. The eye can be explored from the inside and the lens a can be seen changing shape as it focuses light reflected from a near and a far-sighted object.

# The Structure of the Eye{.objective .objective1}

In this section, the anatomy of the eye is outlined, and a brief description of the parts of the eye are provided. Some parts, such as the lens, iris, and cornea are the main parts that let light into the eye and focus it. Other parts, pick up signals such as the retina, muscles change the shape of the lens to focus light, and sclera which is the main body of the eye.

# How the Lens Focuses light to See a Clear Image{.objective .objective2}

In this section, a description of how light is focused by the cornea and lens is described. While they both refract light to focus it to see a clear image, only the lens is able to change shape to change how much light refracts. This is controlled by the ciliary muscles. The lens adjusts to refract light when focusing on near-sight or far-sight.

# How Light Signals to the Brain{.objective .objective3}

In this section, a description of how the retina is stimulated by light will be provided, and an explanation of how this triggers a signal from the retina to the brain via the optic nerve. By exploring the scene, students should be able to observe what happens when light focuses on a point beyond of in front of the object. Thus, leading to an image which will be out of focus.
