This scene transports users to a fictional phone shop, where they can see a large smartphone rotating above a counter to vie a 360◦ view of the device exterior, and an ‘opened’ phone that they can step into and explore. Users can see many of the key internal components withing the phone, such as the battery, SIM card location, and speakers for use during calls.

# A brief History of Mobile Phones{.objective .objective1}

In this section, students are given an overview of the timeline of mobile phone development. Beginning with the first handset and network demonstration in 1973, students find out about the rise of expensive mobile phones in the 1980s, the first text message sent in the 1990s, the expansion of ownership in the 2000s, the launch of Apple’s first iPhone in 2007 marking momentum towards smartphones with large touchscreens and the use of many different apps, to today’s usage where fast data speeds allow for mobile phones to be part of daily life.

# Inside a Mobile Phone: Making Calls{.objective .objective2}

In this section a basic description is given of what components are needed for a mobile phone to make calls; a microphone to detect the user’s voice, antennae to transmit to the network, and a speaker to turn the signal into a voice to be heard in the other device. A SIM card allows the network to know the phone number associated with the handset.

# Inside a Mobile Phone: Additional Functionality{.objective .objective3}

In this section a description is given to just some of the other ways which smartphones are used, including camera and GPS location. The mobile phone’s similarities to a computer are noted, with all components fixed to a printed circuit board (PCB), and a central processing unit (CPU) managing the commands on the phone.
