Castle Under Siege

After The Battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Duke of Normandy became King of England. William began to build castles and overtime they became immensely popular. As a result, castles continually developed and became places to fight wars, and for some, places to live. This scene takes the form of a square keep castle being attacked and defended. Students can explore the castle to learn about Sieges and how to attack and defend a castle under siege.

# What is a Siege? {.objective .objective1}

In this section, students can learn that a siege is when an enemy surrounds a town, castle, or other building so no one can escape, and nothing can get in. Students are also asked to identify how people inside the castle would access fresh water and food if they were trapped inside!

# How would a lord attack a castle? {.objective .objective2}

Students can observe many different types of attacking methods. These include: trebuchets, battering rams and siege towers. Students should try and consider which method would be the most effective.

Students can view a range of defensive features. These include portcullis’ , moats, arrow slits and battlements. Students should try and consider which method would be the most effective.
