Extreme Weather

This scene allows users to explore four zones, each showcasing an example of an extreme weather event; drought, heat wave, heavy rainfall, tropical storm. Students can experience the weather conditions and look for evidence of their impact on the population experiencing the weather event. # Learning objectives 1: To identify four different examples of extreme weather events.{.info} 2: To describe some of the ways that humans are impacted by extreme weather.{.info} # Drought{.objective .objective1} In this section students can learn that a drought is a period with little rainfall. In this activity students are invited to find the drought zone and describe the conditions, imagining the impact this is having on local people. # Heat Wave{.objective .objective2} In this section students can learn that a heat wave is a period of higher-than-average temperatures. In this activity students observe a city experiencing a heat wave, looking for clues about how people are staying cool and the impact of the temperatures on the population. # Heavy Rainfall{.objective .objective3} In this section students can learn that heavy rainfall can often trigger flash-flooding. In this activity students are asked to explore a city experiencing a flash flood, and see how it is impacting on the community. # Tropical Storm{.objective .objective4} In this section students can learn that a tropical storm can be characterised by devastating winds and heavy rainfall.
