Forces - Powering a Rocket

The scene takes the form of a rocket launch site where students explore the forces that keep it grounded and generate lift. By observing the opposing forces, gravity and thrust, students will see what thrust needs to be generated to make the rocket launch.

# Learning objectives

# Grounded by Gravity{.objective .objective1}

In this section, a description of gravity and its role in keeping objects on the surface of the earth will be provided. As objects have a mass, they will be affected by gravity, and the bigger the mass the bigger the effect leading to objects having a bigger weight.

# Generating a Push{.objective .objective2}

In this section, the modelled animation illustrates how combustion of fuel is responsible for generating thrust that leads to the lift needed to launch a rocket. However, as the rocket has a very large mass, the force of thrust will need to be very large too.

# Lift Off{.objective .objective3}

In this section, students will observe the opposing forces, as the rocket begins to launch. As gravity is constant, thrust must be larger so that the resultant force causes the rocket to lift off. A resultant force is the over all effect of two opposing force. If one is larger than its opposing force, the larger force will determine the direction of travel. In this case, the rocket will only lift off if thrust is larger than gravity.
