Description

The scene lets students explore the structure and function of the human kidney within the urinary system. Within the kidney students will be able to observe the organisation of a kidney and a functioning nephron and how molecules are filtered and selectively reabsorbed.

# Learning objectives

1: Be able to describe the organisation of the urinary system.{.info}

2: Be able to describe the structure and function o the kidney{.info}

3: Be able to describe the function of a nephron{.info}

# Organisation of the Urinary System{.objective .objective1}

In this section, the organisation of the urinary system will be outlined. Made up mainly from the kidneys, bladder, and ureter, along with a rich blood supply, its purpose will be described as filtering the blood of its impurities, and regulating water and ion content throughout the human body.

# Structure of the Kidneys{.objective .objective2}

In this section the structure of the kidney will be described. Made up of three main tissue layers: Cortex, Medulla and Pelvis, their function relating to filtration and selective reabsorption will be outlined. Ultimately ensuring that excess water is removed

# The Nephron{.objective .objective3}

In this section, the nephron is described and its role in filtration and selective reabsorption outlined. With millions of these tubules collectively making up the tissue structure of the kidney, they are responsible for filtration of the blood, allowing the filtrate to travel through, and for selective reabsorption to take place. It is the nephron that also respond to the hormone ADH that allows the kidney to regulate how much water is reabsorbed in a process known as osmoregulation.
