Description

Dracula, the Gothic novel, was written by Bram Stoker in London, England between the years of 1891-1897. Written as an epistolary novel, the narrative is revealed through a series of letters, diary entries and newspaper articles. In this scene, explore Bram Castle, commonly known outside of Transylvania as Dracula’s castle and learn about three of the common themes that can be deduced from the book.

# The Consequences of Modernity{.objective .objective1}

In this scene students can learn about how the author, Bram Stoker, declares that the consequences of modernity have forced English society to question their traditional belief systems. Students are asked to look closely at the scene and identify any of the treatments that are used to help Lucy return to her former self.

# The Threat of Female Sexual Expression{.objective .objective2}

In this scene students can learn about the Victorian attitudes towards female sexuality. In this section students will consider whether the traditional attitudes towards women in the Victorian era still exist today.

# Madness{.objective .objective3}

In this scene students can learn about the different supernatural events that take place throughout the book. Your students should consider why it might be easier for the characters to believe they might be going mad.
