Structure of DNA

by Avantis World
This resource is only available as part of a pack

Description

The scene lets students explore and learn about the structure of DNA. Exploring the various models and molecular structures, students will learn about DNA, nucleotides, bases, deoxyribose sugar, inorganic phosphate, and the scientist responsible for much of it, Rosalind Franklin.

# Learning objectives

1: Know the structure of DNA{.info}

2: Know the DNA is a Polymer made from Nucleotides {.info}

# The Polymer {.objective .objective1}

Students will learn about the general features of DNA as a molecule. They will learn about DNA as a polymer. Its general organisation and the work that went into collecting the data that led to the structure being established.

Students will be asked to explore the scene and observe the DNA model. They will be asked to describe the organisation of DNA.

# The Structure {.objective .objective2}

Students will learn about the structure of DNA. They will learn about the molecules or monomer involved in making the polymer, DNA, and how they are arranged to form the double stranded helix. Students will learn about the bases and how they hold the two strands together and form the genetic code, due to complementary base pairing. They will be able to move the missing nucleotides onto the molecule.

Students will be asked to explore the scene and identify the base paring in the DNA model. They will be asked to look for clues that the bases modelled are different.

# The Code {.objective .objective3}

Students will learn about how the bases for triplet base sequences and that which triplet base sequences and the order they’re in will determine the protein made and therefore the characteristic of a living organism.

Students will be asked to explore the simple DNA model and identify the number of triplet base sequences they can see. They will be asked how many amino acids they will code for too.
